Rockland is a town in Plymouth County Massachusetts, United States. The population of Rockland was reported form the 2008 Town Census to be at 18,086. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 10.1 square miles. Rockland is bordered by Weymouth to the northwest, Hingham and Norwell to the northeast, Hanover to the east, Hanson to the south, Whitman to the southwest, and Abington to the west. Rockland is approximately twenty-two miles south of Boston. Rockland is primarily a residential community that was first settled around 1673. Rockland derived its town name from the dominant rocky lands the community sits on. Rockland offers great open space with many parks and recreation fields for the youth of the town. With a strong school system in place, the town strongly supports education and has set high standards for all levels of schooling. Town facilities include a public library, churches, community center, teen center, and 2 golf courses.
